Thousands of homeless survivors braced for their first night in the cold after the quake that inflicted damage up to 30 kilometres (20 miles) away in all directions.
After working in driving rain during the day rescuers pursued their search at night to find more survivors in the regional capital of L'Aquila , the quake's epicentre.
Rescuers had pulled a total of 60 survivors from collapsed buildings, firefighters said.
More than 70,000 people were feared homeless, a government source said, and more than 10,000 buildings were damaged.
