71% of Filipino adults favor passage of Reproductive Health Bill

Seventy-one percent of Filipino adults favor the passage of the Reproductive Health Bill, while 76 percent want family planning education in public schools, the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey revealed.

The Reproductive Health, Responsible Parenthood, and Population Development Act of 2008 or House bill No. 5043 makes artificial contraceptives more accessible to the public through health programs and calls for sex education in schools, among others.

MANILA, Philippines - Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago on Monday called as “infant killers” the Customs officials responsible for the entry of melamine-laced milk and other tainted food products into the country.

Santiago on Monday filed Resolution 694 seeking to identify, prosecute and dismiss from service the Customs officials who "obviously failed to stop smuggling of melamine-positive milk products, and instead may have profited illegally from it."

"Biro mo kung hindi agad na-alert ang ating bansa, naipainom sana iyon sa mga Pilipinong sanggol at namatay rin sila. Kaya ang mga ito, mga infant killers, hindi lang dapat sila i-condemn kundi dapat alamin kung sino sa kanila ang mga sala diyan," Santiago told reporters.

Astronaut's diary goes on display in Jerusalem

JERUSALEM - Pages from an Israeli astronaut's diary that survived the explosion of the space shuttle Columbia and a 37-mile fall to earth are going on display this weekend for the first time in Jerusalem.

The diary belonged to Ilan Ramon, Israel's first astronaut and one of seven crew members killed when Columbia disintegrated upon re-entering the atmosphere on Feb. 1, 2003. Part of the restored diary will be displayed at the Israel Museum beginning Sunday.

A little over two months after the shuttle explosion, NASA searchers found 37 pages from Ramon's diary, wet and crumpled, in a field just outside the U.S. town of Palestine, Texas. The diary survived extreme heat in the explosion, extreme atmospheric cold, and then "was attacked by microorganisms and insects" in the field where it fell, said museum curator Yigal Zalmona.
